Dallas, Texas — March 24, 2010 — This month, 15 leading scholars and researchers in the fields of education and educational technology convened at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education to present and discuss research on a new product category emerging in K-12 education: the digital teaching platform. The workshop was hosted by the Research Advisory Board of Time To Know, developers of an interactive curriculum system designed specifically for today’s one-to-one computing classrooms.
The Research Advisory Board plans to publish a book on this research, which will discuss the evolution of the digital teaching platform and its potential to transform teaching, learning and assessment in K-12 education. The digital teaching platform is designed to function as the primary instructional environment in today’s technology-intensive classrooms. The platform operates in a teacher-led classroom as the primary carrier of core curriculum content. It supports the teacher with tools for curriculum planning, classroom management and assessment.
“The digital teaching platform is an innovative approach to personalizing student learning in a group classroom setting,” said Chris Dede, Ed.D., the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education and a member of the Research Advisory Board. “The research community is developing a variety of strategies for achieving this goal. Time To Know’s curriculum is breaking new ground to realize the power of instructional customization.”
Time To Know is the first complete example of the digital teaching platform. Introduced in Israel in 2007 and launched this school year in the United States, Time To Know empowers teachers to easily manage instruction, learning and assessment. With Time To Know, the teacher guides the class using an engaging core curriculum program that is integrated with tools for classroom management, planning, assessment and collaboration. In Israel, a two-year Time To Know pilot program with fourth and fifth grade students showed improved teaching quality, better test scores, a deeper understanding of concepts, an improved learning environment with fewer disruptions, and an increase in student confidence, motivation and enjoyment of core subjects.
“It’s exciting to work with educators and researchers whose fields of study are blazing new trails in the world of education,” said Ziv Carthy, general manager of Time To Know. “The design of the Time To Know solution is based on research that has been published by top scholars over the past decade. Hence, it is not surprising that these researchers recognize the potential of the digital teaching platform to significantly enhance teaching effectiveness and improve student learning in American schools. For decades schools have invested in educational technology. However, we believe that now is a unique time — a confluence of technology infrastructure affordability, shifts in federal and state regulation, and the introduction of digital teaching platforms, could finally ‘move the needle’ in our schools.”
