Three Key Takeaways From the OECD Report on Vocational Training

December 02, 2015 | By: Time To Know staff

In the words of Shakespeare, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet…” In this case, the rose is Vocational Education and Training (VET). Depending on where you are in the world, you may refer to this as Career Technical Education (CTE), Further Education (FE), or even Professional Education and Training. Recently, the OECD released a report addressing the growing demand in this sector. Want to know what the OECD thinks is vital for the future of these programs? Here are your top three takeaways:

Flexibility — Vocational learners can have a lot on their plates, often juggling school with work and family obligations.  This is why it’s important for there to be flexibility with these programs of study. This may include part-time programs, self-paced and personalized courses, and distance learning. (T2K Tip: All of these are enhanced and enriched when combined with Ed-Tech and digital classroom technology.)

Basic Skills — Basic skills such as literacy and numeracy are critical for success in the workforce. But for many seekers of vocational training, these basic skills sets are lacking. The OECD recommends assessing each learner’s basic skills at the start of a program and ensuring that any weaknesses are addressed. (T2K Tip: Our platforms allow for optimal differentiated learning, so that students in the same course can proceed at their own pace and obtain additional instruction for the areas in which they are weaker.)

Pedagogy — Vocational teachers should be up-to-date with industry skills and experience, as well as with solid pedagogical knowledge. This allows learners to receive the most current training and to benefit from the most effective teaching methods. (T2K Tip: It is also important that any digital learning programs be backed by strong pedagogical know-how.)
